Are You My Guru?

Teachings on the Guru-disciple relationship, your Inner Voice, and why no one can walk the path for you — wisdom from Yogiraj Prakash Shankar Vyas.

Dear Reader

The Self-realised Guru can recognise the disciple, but the disciple cannot immediately recognise the Guru.

This is something that many people find difficult to believe.

But even Babaji said to Lahiri Mahasaya, ‘I have been waiting for you for a long time’ – and Lahiri Mahasaya did not recognise his Guru until after he had emerged from the state of samadhi in the Himalayan cave.

Not everyone is destined to get a Guru, spiritual teacher (or the guidance of a Self-realised Master).

But if they do – Guruji (Yogiraj Prakash Shankar Vyas) says that people find a Guru according to their state of readiness and their own nature.

However, something that everyone does have is an Inner Voice or Guide.

This is something that songwriting first taught me.

We can find our own answers by ‘listening’ in the silence.

The ability grows when you take time to be still, or to meditate.

And perhaps this can be doubly important for someone who does have a Living Guru to remember!

It may be tempting to ask your Guru (or perhaps to ask the wisest person you know) –

‘What should I do about my problems? What about this marriage? When will I find a job?’

‘Can you tell me about my past life – and what is going to happen in the future?’

But the Guru or Satguru (or wise one) will always encourage you to find your own answers – to become independent.

The Satguru is the living embodiment of the Greatest Love of All – but we have to find this Limitless Love within.

We are called to move beyond opinions and prejudice, belief systems, division and duality through Kriya practice.

The Satguru is always happy to answer questions regarding your own practice, but never wants to see you dependent, lazy or over-reliant.

Regarding finding your own answers, Guruji says:

‘I can put food on your plate – but you have to eat by yourself!’

‘Everything is there, in the silence.’

‘I have done my duty: if I have initiated you, you already have the key – but you have to open the door yourself. No one can do your Kriya practice but you.’

With love and smiles,

Heidi x

P.S. I remember a disciple telling me about how he used to be so curious to know about his past life, so one day he summoned his courage to ask Guruji (Yogiraj Prakash Shankar Vyas) about it. And Guruji’s reply was simple and poignant: ‘Why do you want to carry a corpse on your shoulder?’

P.P.S. I put a post on the same topic on Instagram recently, so in case you’re not following yet, this is another place where I post extracts from Guruji’s teachings, reflections on the path, and book extracts. You’ll also find me on Facebook at Kriya Yoga: Sharing the Wisdom of a Living Master.
